On the 13th and 14th of January 2018, the 52nd International Waterbird Census (IWC) took placе. This is an initiative of Wetlands International, which covers more than 25,000 locations in more than 100 countries. The data is collected in an international database (http://wpe.wetlands.org/).
In Bulgaria it is currently coordinated by the Executive Environment Agency within the framework of the National System for Monitoring of the Biological Diversity (NSMBH).
In 2018, Science or Nature Foundation took part in the bird count in three dams in western Bulgaria – Studena, Dyakovo and Pchelina. There were 19 species registered among which:
mallard duck,Eurasian coot,black-necked grebe,common pochard,great crested grebe,Eurasian teal,black-headed gull,grey heron and great egret
A pleasant surprise was the “tail” of the Pchelina dam, where species diversity and their numbers were surprisingly high.
