After the first competition “Watering place with history” and all the euphoria surrounding the event, we decided to share our inspiration with you and show the works of the participants. For this, we made a map on which the stories about the watering places, through which students from different parts of the country participated in the competition, were noted. The winter guarding for 2022 has been successfully completed
Over the last four weekends, thanks to our volunteers, we were able to visit key winter shelters of important colonies in the municipalities of Asenovgrad and Peshtera. Тhe caves and the beautiful nature around them are attractive and they are often visited by people.

During the cold months bats fall into a unique physiological state called hibernation. Their heart rate and breathing decrease, excretory processes and movements are minimal and their body temperature drops. That’s how they survive the period when there is no food.

Eastern Rhodopes’ Racing 2021
We successfully held the first dog friendly mountain running competition in Bulgaria. The ultramarathon took place on October 23rd in the mountain hills of Eastern Rhodopes, which welcomed 42 runners and 7 four-legged friends.

International Bat Night at Sofia Zoo
For another year, the Science for Nature Foundation celebrated the International Bat Night at Sofia Zoo. The event took place on October 9 and despite the bad weather, it was a day full of positive emotions and sunny smiles. Watering places are part of the Bulgarian culture and traditions. In the past the watering places were spots where old and young gathered, the first meetings of lovers were there. Wealthy people donated money for building of watering places. Many of them were used for irrigation of the livestock (cows, goats, etc.). Cave guardians
Caves are one of the key shelters for bats in Bulgaria, but many of them are subject to vandalism. This has a negative impact on bats, because they are extremely sensitive animals and in case of disturbance they leave their shelters. During the winter bats are really helpless, because in Bulgaria they hibernate (they sleep through the winter). In this physiological condition their heart rate slows from over 400 to around 10 beats per minute and their body temperature drops to 0 – 10 °С. International Bat Night at Sofia Zoo
This year, too, the Science for Nature Foundation celebrated International Bat Night on the territory of Sofia Zoo. The event took place on 10 October and young and old learned interesting facts about bats life, their association with COVID-19 and why they shouldn’t be afraid.

International Bat Night at the town of Madzharovo
This year, too, the Science for Nature Foundation celebrated the International Bat Night with the aim to protect bats and spread knowledge on their important role. The event took place on 6th September at the Eastern Rhodopes Nature Conservation Center in the town of Madzharovo. At the event we put an information stand, where everybody had the opportunity to ask their questions and to take pictures with thematic models, which help spread a good cause. The visitors were informed about the alternative shelters for bats – bat houses, and the chance to take part in placing them on the trees.
