Central Balkan National Park Directorate

Central Balkan National Park

Implementation period:
2017 – 2022

This is a 5-year project (2017 – 2022) which aims at implementation of one of the main goals of the Central Balkan National Park Management Plan – “To maintain an optimal level of knowledge and long-term monitoring of biodiversity in the park”.

The species subject to monitoring are mammals, incl. bear, chamois, souslik, wolf, red deer, as well as birds of prey, such as golden eagle, peregrine falcon, long-legged buzzard, griffon vulture.

Methods of monitoring are:

  • Camera trapping
  • Tracking with GPS transmitters
  • Visual observations
  • Mapping important habitats of species
  • Field information analysis

With this project, Nature Science Foundation aims to improve the conservation of rare and endangered species in the park by:

  • Study and monitoring of the population status of species
  • Study and assessment of current threats and impacts on species
  • Updating and maintaining a database of biodiversity in the park

The project is implemented under a cooperation agreement between the Science of Nature Foundation and the Central Balkan National Park Directorate signed on 1 July 2017.
