Habitat Danube

What We Do

Monitoring and Research of Target Species and Habitats

  • Conduct population monitoring and habitat mapping for amphibians, reptiles, and bats.
  • Analyse and assess habitat conditions to inform targeted management measures.

Habitat Improvement for Target Species

  • Restoration of wetlands: Construction of five natural depressions with water bodies to improve habitat conditions for the European pond turtle and the European fire-bellied toad.
  • Rehabilitation of old fountains: Restoration of five water sources to provide water and food resources for wildlife.
  • Habitat cleanup: Removal of waste within species habitats to reduce disturbance and degradation.

Fire-Prevention Measures

  • Establishment of fire-prevention depots: Procurement of equipment and creation of four strategically located depots.
  • Community training: Organizing training sessions for local residents on fire prevention and response.
  • Road clearance: Clearing 2.5 km of access roads to prevent fire spread and facilitate rapid intervention.

Education and Community Engagement

  • Organising lectures, workshops, and children’s camps to raise awareness of the target species and promote their protection.
  • Hosting the “Bat Night Festival”, featuring exhibitions, screenings, and educational activities.
  • Distribution of printed materials and educational souvenirs related to the project.

Information and Communication

  • Organising round tables, press conferences, and publication of articles to promote project activities and results.

Our Objectives

  • Improve habitat conditions for the target species and increase the area of suitable habitats.
  • Enhance awareness and engagement among local communities and young people in nature conservation.
  • Contribute to the long-term preservation of regional biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources.

The project adopts an integrated approach to biodiversity conservation, combining scientific research, educational initiatives, and practical conservation actions.
Science for Nature implements the project in partnership with the Municipality of Belene.
