Action Plan for the Conservation of the Early Marsh Orchid and the Elder-flowered Orchid in Bulgaria for the Period 2022–2031

Overview of Species from the Genus Dactylorhiza

Species of the genus Dactylorhiza play an important ecological role within the habitats they occupy. Their life cycle is intricately intertwined with other organisms, forming numerous ecological links within the habitat. Symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi are essential for their development: the seeds germinate and grow thanks to the biogenic compounds supplied by these fungi. Although the species do not produce nectar, they are pollinated by specific insect species attracted to food-related scents emitted by the flowers.
Despite differences in distribution and conservation status, all Dactylorhiza species share equal importance for nature conservation as indicators of healthy and well-functioning ecosystems.
The target species of this project are the calopsoid orchid and the flesh-red orchid. The calopsoid orchid is a Balkan endemic occurring locally in Bulgaria—in the Stara Planina, Sredna Gora, the Rhodopes, and the Tundzha Plain—typically inhabiting moist, open meadows. The flesh-red orchid has a wider distribution across Europe and Asia, including Bulgaria’s mountain regions, and prefers wet meadows.

Major Threats to the Species

  • Changes in hydrological regimes leading to meadow drying;
  • Meadow ploughing and conversion into intensive pastures;
  • Changes in land-use practices;
  • Mowing, which disrupts reproductive success;
  • Use of pesticides.

Project Goal

  • The project aims to develop an Action Plan for the conservation of the calopsoid and flesh-red orchids.

The main activities include:

  • Collecting and analysing existing information from published sources and unpublished data on the species in Bulgaria.
  • Organizing expert meetings on the two species, including consultations with stakeholders.
  • Preparing the first draft of the Action Plan.
  • Conducting public consultations in Sofia.
  • Incorporating comments and recommendations and finalising the Action Plan for the conservation of the calopsoid and flesh-red orchids.

Why Is It Important?

The project is essential for defining effective measures to conserve the calopsoid and flesh-red orchids, both of which are threatened by human activities and environmental change. These plants serve as indicators of ecosystem health and maintain key ecological relationships within their habitats. Through scientific research, expert consultations, and public discussions, the project establishes a concrete framework for improving and safeguarding the populations of these orchids and their habitats, while increasing public awareness of their ecological importance.
