Overview of the Lady’s Slipper Orchid
The Lady’s Slipper Orchid is widely regarded as the most beautiful of all European orchids. The species does not produce nectar; instead, it is pollinated by insects attracted to the sweet fragrance of its flowers. In Bulgaria, it is part of mixed forest ecosystems of Black Pine, Silver Fir, and Beech, and it is critically endangered. Conserving the species and its habitats ensures the preservation of a wide range of ecosystem services—ecological, economic, social, and cultural—thereby contributing to human well-being.
The Lady’s Slipper Orchid is distributed across the temperate and northern regions of Eurasia and North America. In Bulgaria, it occurs in the Rhodope Mountains up to 1400 m a.s.l., inhabiting coniferous, mixed, and deciduous forests, shrublands, and limestone meadows. It is extremely rare in the country and is considered critically endangered.
Major Threats to the Species
- Climate drying and climate change;
- Forest fires, which directly destroy populations and alter soil and atmospheric conditions;
- Flower picking.
- Over the years, population disturbance has resulted in low numbers and reduced density, complicating efforts to improve the species’ conservation status.
What Does the Project Include?
The project aims to develop an Action Plan for the conservation of the Lady’s Slipper Orchid.
The main activities include:
- Preparation and approval of a technical assignment for drafting the Action Plan for the conservation of the species.
- Collection and analysis of existing information from published sources, national herbarium collections, personal datasets of the plan’s authors, and additional field data.
- Field surveys assessing the condition of populations and their habitats.
- Expert meetings and consultations with stakeholders.
- Preparation of the first draft of the Action Plan.
- Public consultation of the plan with stakeholders in Sofia.
- Incorporation of comments and recommendations and finalisation of the Action Plan.
Why Is It Important?
The Lady’s Slipper Orchid plays an important ecological role. Its specialised pollination system and mycorrhizal associations make it a reliable indicator of healthy and resilient ecosystems. Habitat loss, illegal collection, and environmental change pose serious threats to its populations, underlining its significance as a priority species for conservation. Safeguarding the Lady’s Slipper Orchid helps maintain biodiversity, supports pollinator populations, and protects the ecosystems in which the species occurs. The development of the Action Plan defines the measures necessary for the long-term conservation of the species and the sustainable management of its habitats.
